Latvia calls for stronger European responsibility in defence, security
Europe must take greater responsibility for its own security by increasing defence spending, Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže has said, according to adviser Toms Sadovskis, as reported by Delfi.
Braže made the remarks during a meeting of NB8 foreign ministers, where discussions focused on support for Ukraine, strengthening European and NATO security, and expanding sanctions against Russia.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas also took part in the talks, providing updates on sanctions policy, military and financial assistance to Ukraine, and the impact of developments in the Middle East on energy markets.
Ministers reaffirmed that Ukraine remains central to European security and pledged continued political, financial, and military support, including backing for its EU integration process.
They welcomed the EU’s 20th sanctions package against Russia and stressed the need for further restrictive measures, as well as continued diplomatic isolation of Moscow.
Braže emphasised that Europe should strengthen its own defence capabilities while maintaining transatlantic cooperation with the United States as the foundation of collective security.
The discussions were held ahead of an upcoming NATO summit, with participants highlighting alliance unity and increased defence spending commitments. The NB8 grouping includes Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Finland, and Sweden.
