Lithuania to compensate damage caused by downed drones
Lithuania will compensate for damage caused by downed drones after parliament approved amendments to relevant legislation.
The Seimas, Lithuania’s parliament, unanimously adopted changes to the law on the use of military force and the law on the state reserve, according to TASS.
Under the new provisions, the state commits to compensating damage caused by falling objects that were shot down after illegally entering Lithuanian airspace. Both private individuals and commercial entities will be eligible for compensation.
So far, Lithuania has not recorded incidents resulting in damage of the kind addressed by the new laws. In 2026, Lithuanian border guards neutralised 25 drones, all of which fell in sparsely populated border areas.
Two drones launched from Ukraine penetrated deeper into Lithuanian territory. One fell into a lake, likely due to electronic warfare measures or a technical malfunction. The other crashed in a forested area far from populated locations.
