Lukashenko: Deployment of "Oreshnik" missile system strengthens Belarus defence
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has said that the deployment of the Russian-made “Oreshnik” mobile missile system and tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus serves as a strong deterrent and enhances the country’s defence capabilities.
Speaking at a ceremony for graduates of higher military educational institutions and senior officers, Lukashenko said the presence of the systems had become “a significant factor in strategic deterrence” and could “cool even the most heated tempers,” according to Russia’s TASS news agency.
He said Belarus was not using the deployment for show or intimidation, but emphasised that the weapons were a serious addition to the country’s military capability.
“These weapons significantly enhance our level of defence,” he said, adding that “those with hot heads need to cool down.”
Lukashenko also stressed that Belarus should not become complacent about its military readiness, pointing to recent inspections of combat preparedness. He said there remained “a huge amount of work ahead” to improve military methods and deployment strategies.
Addressing newly commissioned officers, he said they would be expected to take up leadership roles in military units and contribute to the continued development of Belarus’s armed forces.
