Media: Egypt serves as mediator between US, Iran amid nuclear negotiations
Egypt is actively mediating between the United States and Iran, maintaining communication channels that were first established several months ago in relation to Iran’s nuclear program.
Cairo is coordinating with multiple countries to develop a new negotiating proposal and asserts that a potential agreement is close at hand, the Lebanese newspaper Al Akhbar reports.
The report emphasizes that Egypt’s diplomatic initiatives are closely tied to its economic interests. The de-escalation strategy aims to prevent further disruption to revenues from the Suez Canal, which have begun to recover following the cessation of hostilities in Gaza, while also supporting the revival of tourism and the attraction of foreign investment. Egyptian economic analyses caution that a broader regional conflict could produce a “very bleak” scenario for the country’s economy.
The US and Iran have reportedly informed each other that they are ready to conduct negotiations on an agreement to end tensions between them.
A senior American official said that US President Donald Trump’s administration has made it clear it is open to holding such talks as soon as this week.
Türkiye, Egypt and Qatar are working to organize a meeting this week between White House special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian officials in Ankara, Türkiye’s capital.
