Media: Trump not interested in support for Ukraine's reconstruction
The administration of President Donald Trump has indicated a reluctance to engage in the country's post-conflict reconstruction.
A Western diplomat told media that the new US administration believes the private sector should primarily drive recovery efforts, rather than involving direct government support, Caliber.Az reports.
During a press conference on January 21, President Trump did not dismiss the idea of completely halting military aid to Ukraine, stating he is open to meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin "at any time."
Furthermore, Trump mentioned the possibility of tightening sanctions against Russia if it fails to engage in meaningful negotiations regarding the situation in Ukraine.
Earlier, the US president told World Economic Forum attendees on January 23 that he wants to end the war in Ukraine.
"Our efforts to secure a peace settlement between Russia and Ukraine are now, hopefully underway. It's so important to get that done," Trump said in an address from Washington.
Trump suggested that Russia might also be open to negotiations and expressed his willingness to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. "Putin would like to see me meet as soon as we can," Trump said, emphasizing that China’s influence over Russia could also play a role in resolving the conflict.
