Péter Magyar pledges to keep illegal migrants out of Hungary
Hungary’s incoming prime minister, Péter Magyar, has pledged to maintain the hardline migration policy established by his predecessor, Viktor Orbán, in order to prevent illegal migrants from entering the country.
According to Ukrainian outlet Strana.ua, Magyar made the remarks in his first speech following his election, stressing the need for even stronger border protection measures. He noted that he had clearly conveyed Hungary’s firm stance on illegal migration to the leadership of the European Commission and other European officials.
“We do not accept any pacts or redistribution mechanisms. We will maintain our border fence on the southern frontier and repair it, as there are gaps in it,” Magyar said.
The issue of opening borders to migrants remains one of the key conditions set by the European Union for Hungary. However, Orbán had consistently refused to comply with these demands, prompting Brussels to suspend a number of financial disbursements to Budapest.
