Top Anglican cleric voices support for Pope’s peace message

16 April 2026 20:14

The Archbishop of Canterbury has expressed solidarity with Pope Leo XIV over his appeal for peace, as global tensions in the Middle East continue to draw reactions from senior religious figures.

Archbishop Sarah Mullally, who took up her position as head of the Church of England in January, said she stood with the Pope in his call for restraint and reconciliation amid ongoing conflict, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

Speaking in a statement, Mullally said she supported what she described as his “courageous call for peace.”

“As innocent people are killed and displaced, families torn apart, and futures destroyed, the human cost of war is incalculable,” Mullally said in a statement. “It is the calling of every Christian – and of all people of faith and goodwill – to work and pray for peace.”

Although she did not refer directly to US President Donald Trump, Mullally also emphasised the responsibility of political leaders to pursue peaceful solutions.

Christians, she said, must “urge all those entrusted with political authority to pursue every possible peaceful and just means of resolving conflict.’’

The comments come after Pope Leo’s recent remarks drew criticism from Trump, who last weekend said the pontiff was “terrible for foreign policy.”

Alongside his role as Archbishop of Canterbury, Mullally is the spiritual leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion, which includes the Episcopal Church in the United States and represents more than 100 million members globally.
