NATO, Europe enhance overmatch capabilities to counter evolving threats

21 July 2024 02:11

NATO and European nations are focusing on "overmatch" capabilities to gain a strategic edge, particularly in the air domain. This approach emphasizes superiority in intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), and electronic warfare, lessons highlighted by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

According to Nick Chaffey, CEO and General Manager for Northrop Grumman UK, the war in Ukraine underscores the urgent need for advanced technologies to counter near-peer threats effectively, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

Chaffey, speaking from Northrop Grumman’s Cheltenham headquarters, stressed the importance of air-based supremacy for the Royal Air Force and other European air forces. This involves defending airspace, enhancing ISR capabilities, and operating in contested environments by leveraging insights from Ukraine. The integration of F-35s across Europe, coupled with the development of next-generation fighter programs like the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) and Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), aims to boost Europe’s defence capabilities and industrial prowess.

Aircraft survivability is crucial for maintaining air dominance. Northrop Grumman's advanced systems, including the AN/APG-83 Scalable Agile Beam Radar and Integrated Viper Electronic Warfare Suite, are vital for manoeuvring in contested airspaces. Chaffey highlighted the importance of missile defence, emphasizing the role of the Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS). In Poland, Northrop Grumman has collaborated on IBCS for medium- and short-range air defence, becoming Poland's first international partner for this capability.

The integration of data across various domains, including cyber, is critical for effective operations. IBCS offers a strategic advantage by matching the most suitable weapon to incoming threats, helping manage munitions more effectively—a lesson from conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Northrop Grumman is also supporting the UK's key defence programs. The company is focused on maritime defence, cybersecurity, and advanced air capabilities, including the integration of the E-7 Wedgetail with Northrop Grumman’s Multi-Role Electronically Scanned Array (MESA) radar. Additionally, they are working on integrating multiple tactical views into a strategic battlefield picture for both the British Army and Royal Air Force.

Looking ahead, Northrop Grumman aims to enhance European air forces' capabilities through advanced platforms like the B-21 Raider, which will be interoperable with the F-35 and future European systems. Chaffey emphasizes the need for NATO-wide commonality in technology and systems to ensure effective defence and industrial collaboration in the years to come.
