No danger to residents after acid leak at Belgian nuclear power plant
Emergency services intervened at the Tihange nuclear power plant in the province of Liège following a hydrochloric acid leak, authorities announced.
The incident was confirmed by the plant operator, Engie, which reassured the public that “there was no danger to the surrounding area,” The Brussels Times reports.
The response operation was ongoing as of approximately 2:00 PM. Engie explained that the leak originated from a tank that had already been secured within a storage container for safety purposes.
The plant’s on-site fire brigade initially responded to the incident and called in local fire services to assist with pumping out and neutralising the acid.
Despite the leak, Engie emphasized that safety in the vicinity of the plant remained uncompromised.
