Nursultan Nazarbayev no more "leader of nation" in Kazakhstan
The Constitutional Court of Kazakhstan has ruled to invalidate the law "On the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan", which proclaimed Nursultan Nazarbayev the leader of the nation (Elbasy).
According to Gazeta.Ru, the document notes that “at present, the Constitution lacks legal grounds for preserving the constitutional law “On the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan - Elbasy” in the current law of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in connection with which it is declared invalid.
The corresponding law was adopted back in 2000 and was finalized several times.
Earlier, the speaker of the Majilis (lower house) of the Parliament of Kazakhstan, Yerlan Koshanov, spoke about plans to repeal the law on the first president of the republic, which gives the ex-head of state a number of privileges and powers.
Nursultan Nazarbayev led Kazakhstan for almost 30 years, before leaving office in March 2019 when Kassym-Jomart Tokayev became his successor.
