Paris calls for major policy change in Iran amid leadership transition
France has called on Iran to fundamentally change its policies following the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new Supreme Leader.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot reiterated Paris’ position in remarks to journalists, stressing that the international community is concerned less with leadership changes than with the actions of the Iranian government, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
“Real change for Iran lies in altering its position and putting an end to destabilizing activities,” Barrot said.
The minister emphasized that the identity of the next Supreme Leader is not the central issue for France and its partners.
“The question is not who becomes the new Supreme Leader,” he noted. “The question is whether the regime will agree to serious concessions and a radical change of position.”
Barrot also underscored the urgency of de-escalation in the region, calling for an immediate halt to rising tensions in the Middle East.
