COP29 achievements reflect Azerbaijan’s commitment to climate action Parliament speaker says
Speaker of the Azerbaijani parliament Sahiba Gafarova addressed the 57th plenary session of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the CIS member states in St. Petersburg on November 22.
Gafarova emphasised that cooperation within the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly has become an effective partnership mechanism among the CIS member states, significantly contributing to the development of mutual activity in various sectors, the Press and Public Relations Department of the Azerbaijani parliament told APA, Caliber.Az reports.
During her speeches and meetings, Gafarova provided information about the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which is being held in Baku under the support and special attention of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
She reiterated this topic at the plenary session of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly. She reminded the audience that COP29 is nearing its conclusion, and the achievements made during the conference inspire hope that the international community will remain unified and consistent in addressing this issue.
Gafarova also highlighted that the two-day meeting and the final document reflected Azerbaijan's unified stance in the fight against climate change.
COP29, taking place at Baku Stadium from November 11 to 22, marks a significant milestone for Azerbaijan as the country hosts a Conference of the Parties (COP) for the first time.
At COP29, environmental organisations and climate activists have expressed their dissatisfaction with the lack of ambitious solutions to combat global warming and the call for nations to develop a new plan for phasing out fossil fuels. The participants emphasised that without significant funding and decisive action, the world faces an impending ecological disaster.
