Pashinyan pledges to initiate new Armenian constitution if re-elected
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has announced plans to initiate the adoption of a new constitution if he is re-elected in the parliamentary elections scheduled for June and his party secures a political majority in the legislature.
Pashinyan stressed that constitutional reform remains an exclusively domestic issue for Armenia, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
“You know, we have never discussed the issue of the constitution with Azerbaijan or with any partner, because this is exclusively our internal agenda. And we proceed from this agenda,” the prime minister said.
Pashinyan also noted that discussions on adopting a new constitution have been on Armenia’s political agenda since 2018–2020.
According to the Armenian leader, the proposal is included in the election platform of the ruling Civil Contract party.
“After the elections and the formation of a political majority in parliament, we will initiate the adoption of a new constitution,” Pashinyan stated, adding that the process would be carried out through a national referendum.
