Peru: At least one dead, dozens injured in Machu Picchu tourist train crash
At least one person has been killed and around 30 passengers injured after two tourist trains collided near Machu Picchu, Peru, local authorities report.
The accident occurred in the early afternoon near Qoriwayrachina, an archaeological site close to the famed Inca citadel. One train was traveling from Machu Picchu, while the other was headed to the site, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
The person killed was identified as a railway worker, Jhonathan Castillo Gonzalez, a police captain in nearby Cusco. Train services along the line connecting Machu Picchu with Cusco were suspended following the crash.
No official details have been released regarding the cause of the collision. Footage shared by local media showed train carriages with broken windows and dented sides, trapped on tracks set between a forest and a rock wall.
Machu Picchu, built by the Incas in the 15th century, attracts around 1.5 million visitors annually. The site is known for its dry-stone walls and key structures, including the Temple of the Sun, and serves as one of Peru’s most significant historical and tourist destinations.
