PM: New Georgian parliament to convene without presidential intervention

27 October 2024 15:32

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has stated that no actions from the opposition or protests will disrupt the functioning of parliament or the government's approval processes.

Kobakhidze made these remarks at the briefing, Caliber.Az report per Russian media.

"The opposition has no resources for protests. The first parliamentary session will proceed as usual. Parliament will begin its work, and the government staff will be approved. Processes in our country will continue as normal," Kobakhidze emphasised.

He also warned the opposition against taking any actions that could undermine the constitutional order of the country.

"I advise everyone in the opposition to refrain from actions that go against the constitutional framework of our nation," Kobakhidze noted.

He also stated that no one from the opposition will be able to challenge the legitimacy of the newly elected parliament, which will be formed following the election.

Furthermore, he emphasised that Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili will be unable to block the inaugural session of the new parliament unless she officially convenes it. "The deadline for convening the inaugural session is set at 10 days.

On the 10th day, the parliament will assemble on its own to hold the first meeting. The president has no means to sabotage this process, even if Zourabichvili were to violate the Constitution of Georgia," Kobakhidze responded when asked what would happen if the president failed to convene the new parliament as required by law.
