Poland to end fuel price caps this summer, Tusk says
Poland will end its temporary fuel price cap scheme this summer, Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said, as the government moves to unwind emergency measures introduced during a period of global energy volatility.
The intervention, launched in March, included a cut in VAT on fuel to 8% from 23%, a reduction in excise duty to the EU minimum, and the introduction of daily caps on motor fuel prices, Caliber.Az reports per British media.
The measures were repeatedly extended in two-week intervals.
On Friday, authorities extended the VAT reduction and price caps on petrol and diesel until the end of June, but did not renew the excise duty cuts, signalling a gradual rollback of the support package.
Tusk said the decision reflected expectations that international energy markets would stabilise as tensions linked to the conflict involving Iran ease.
"We had the cheapest fuels in Europe throughout this crisis, but we will be finalising this project this summer," Tusk told reporters in Lomza, eastern Poland.
