Polish FM calls unified European army unrealistic
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has described the idea of a unified European army as unrealistic, citing the impossibility of merging national armed forces.
He emphasised that instead, a European Legion could be created, initially a brigade-level unit that citizens of member states, and possibly candidate countries, could join, Caliber.Az reports via Polish media.
FM added that funding for such a formation could come from the European Union budget.
According to him, the legion would not be a force capable of deterring threats on the scale of Russia, but it could respond effectively to lower-level dangers.
“It would not be a force able to deter Putin, but there are lower-level threats, such as in North Africa or the Balkans, where we should be able to act together,” Sikorski noted.
He added that the deteriorating international security situation in Europe makes discussion of such an initiative particularly relevant.
