President Aliyev congratulates Spain on "magnificent victory" at FIFA World Cup

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has congratulated Spain on winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup in a letter addressed to King Felipe VI.

In the message, the president congratulated the Spanish monarch and the Spanish people on behalf of himself and the people of Azerbaijan, describing Spain’s triumph as a "magnificent victory" and marking the country's second FIFA World Cup title, Caliber.Az reports via state media.

“On the occasion of the magnificent victory of the Spanish national football team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and its winning of a second World Cup title, I sincerely congratulate you and, through you, the entire Spanish people on behalf of myself and the people of Azerbaijan,” President Aliyev wrote.

The Azerbaijani president also praised the Spanish national team for its performances throughout the tournament, saying the players had demonstrated exceptional skill, determination, and resilience.

“I extend my warmest congratulations to the Spanish footballers, who demonstrated high skill, great determination, and an unbreakable will during the World Cup matches, giving their fans unforgettable moments and boundless joy, and I wish them continued success in the future,” he wrote.

Spain secured the 2026 World Cup title by defeating Argentina in the final. Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute after being set up by Nico Williams. The Spanish side also had two goals disallowed during the match.
