Azerbaijani president calls for abolishing Minsk Group during meeting with OSCE Secretary General PHOTO/UPDATED

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has called for the abolition of the OSCE Minsk Group, stating that the institution had utterly failed to resolve the long-standing Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict.

Aliyev made the remarks while receiving Feridun Sinirlioğlu, the newly appointed Secretary General of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), to discuss key regional issues and cooperation between Azerbaijan and the organisation, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

President Aliyev extended his congratulations to Sinirlioğlu on his appointment, emphasising the importance of the OSCE’s role in fostering peace and stability in the region. Sinirlioğlu, in turn, expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and noted that the South Caucasus remains a key focus on the OSCE’s agenda.

During the meeting, the OSCE Secretary General conveyed his congratulations on the progress made toward an agreement on the peace treaty text between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He highlighted that discussions on the normalisation of relations between the two nations are ongoing and acknowledged the positive steps taken in this regard.

Sinirlioğlu also touched on the various cooperation projects implemented by the OSCE with Azerbaijan.

President Aliyev reiterated Azerbaijan’s position regarding the OSCE Minsk Group, stating that it was time to dissolve the group, which had failed to resolve the longstanding conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He called for the abolition of all related institutions and emphasised that Armenia must also take steps in this direction. The President affirmed that Azerbaijan had successfully secured its territorial integrity and sovereignty through both military and diplomatic efforts, thus upholding the norms and principles of international law as established in the Helsinki Final Act.
