Raytheon lands $1 billion contract to strengthen Kuwait’s air defences

30 May 2026 08:01

The US Department of Defence has awarded Raytheon a contract worth $1 billion to supply Kuwait with fire units for the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS), marking a significant step in the Gulf state’s ongoing military modernization efforts.

According to the agreement, cited by foreign media, work on the contract will be carried out in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, and is scheduled for completion by May 2031. The project will be overseen by the US Army Contracting Command based in Redstone, Alabama, which will coordinate implementation alongside Raytheon.

NASAMS is a ground-based air defence system designed to counter a wide range of aerial threats. The platform is equipped with medium- to long-range missiles carrying high-explosive blast fragmentation warheads. Each fire unit can accommodate up to six missiles and is capable of engaging fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial systems, and cruise missiles at distances of up to 60 kilometers (37 miles).

The system can intercept targets at altitudes reaching 69,000 feet (21,000 meters) and relies on distributed sensor networks capable of detecting threats at ranges of approximately 120 kilometres (75 miles), enhancing its effectiveness against incoming aerial attacks.

The contract comes as Kuwait accelerates efforts to strengthen its defense capabilities amid heightened regional tensions. The country has faced repeated missile and drone incidents attributed to Iran, which Tehran describes as retaliatory actions connected to broader regional dynamics involving the US and Israel.

In recent years, Kuwait has significantly increased defence spending across multiple domains. Prior to this latest agreement, the country allocated $370 million for naval combat systems and an additional $467 million for hull development related to its planned Al Dorra missile boats.

At the same time, Kuwait has been investing in domestic defence production to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers. In February, the country inaugurated a new facility dedicated to manufacturing NATO-standard light ammunition, aimed at boosting self-sufficiency.

These efforts have been complemented by continued support from Washington. Just a month before the NASAMS contract was announced, the US approved an $800 million package to assist Kuwait in maintaining and sustaining its Patriot air and missile defence systems.
