Robert Kennedy Jr. challenges Azerbaijan New hope for Armenian revanchists

30 December 2023 13:12

Ahead of the US presidential elections, Armenians seem to have another reason to rejoice. Thus, the Armenian media reported that an American politician, a member of the Kennedy family, son of Robert Francis Kennedy and nephew of US President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Robert Francis Kennedy Jr., who nominated himself for the presidency of the United States, came out in support of the Armenian separatism. The next presidential elections in the United States are scheduled for November 5, 2024. Kennedy Jr. announced in October 2023 that he would run for President of the United States as an independent candidate.

So, the next candidate called on the US government to “mobilize the international community to take steps to ensure the safe return of the Armenians of Karabakh to their historical homeland, as well as to protect their right to self-determination,” which he wrote about in his video message published on the social network X.

Needless to say, the absurd statements of the American politician are like a balm for the soul of the Armenian revanchists. Simultaneously, they do not care that such statements by politicians, and especially ahead of the elections, are not at all the compassion of a descendant of a noble family for the “centuries-old aspirations” of the Armenians, but the money and votes of the Armenian diaspora. According to Armenian media, about two million Armenians live in the United States, and therefore their votes (and donations) matter to presidential candidates.

By the way, Robert Kennedy Jr. is not the only pro-Armenian politician in this clan. Literally, all the major political figures of this family supported the Armenian diaspora in the United States. For example, the media report that the Kennedy family’s acquaintance with the Armenian diaspora took place in Boston, Massachusetts.

The head of the family, Joseph Kennedy, a businessman, was very familiar with the Armenian Mugar family, who are still considered one of the most successful business families in the United States. Naturally, the diaspora, represented by the Mugar family and leaders of Armenian organizations, supported the candidacy of young John Kennedy in the elections to the House of Representatives from Massachusetts. In 1951, the newly elected congressman became one of the initiators of the adoption of the document on the “Armenian genocide”. It is noteworthy that during the Cuban missile crisis, negotiations with the US president were conducted by Anastas Mikoyan.

In this regard, USSR ambassador to the USA Anatoly Dobrynin, in his monograph “Purely Confidential,” especially noted that Mikoyan and Kennedy quickly found a common language, and Mikoyan in his memoirs boasted that he had personal friendly relations with John and Robert Kennedy. However, this was actually the case, since Anastas Mikoyan was the only representative of the USSR participating in the farewell ceremony for President Kennedy, who was assassinated on November 22, 1963.

In this context, it is appropriate to recall that the youngest son of the Kennedy family, Edward Kennedy, who was also known as an Armenianophile, in 1974 supported the first resolution recognizing the “Armenian genocide,” which was adopted by the House of Representatives. He, pay attention, became one of the key initiators of the adoption of the notorious 907th Amendment.

Of course, Robert Kennedy Jr. relied on the support of the Armenian lobby.

“As president of the United States, I will use diplomacy, our moral authority, our economic leverage and sanctions to rebuild Armenia. I want to contribute to the restoration of the sovereignty of Armenia and Artsakh. I want to do this through peaceful means. Instead of starting a new war somewhere, I would like to stop one of them,” promised the nephew of former US President, John F. Kennedy.

However, the chances that an Armenophile populist from the famous Kennedy clan will be able to become the owner of the White House are extremely low. There are bigger sharks out there - like Biden or Trump if the latter is allowed to participate in the elections. In addition, election promises are one thing, but real politics are quite another. And politicians in Washington understand that it is certainly not worth quarreling with Azerbaijan and Turkey for the sake of the Armenians. Accordingly, no matter how much people in Armenia indulge themselves with illusions that Washington’s foreign policy can radically change, a miracle will not happen, no matter what mountains of gold the descendant of the Kennedy family now promises them.
