Romania scrambles fighter jets amid Russian drone activity near border
In response to a reported incursion by a Russian drone near its border, Romania deployed four fighter jets on September 27 night to monitor the situation.
The country's Defence Ministry confirmed the operation, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
The alert was prompted by a series of Russian attacks against Ukraine in the vicinity of the Danube River, close to Romania's border. The ministry noted that "UAV groups approaching Ukrainian airspace near Romanian airspace" had been detected, necessitating a swift response.
At 01:52, two Romanian Air Force F-16 jets were scrambled, followed by the launch of two Spanish Air Force F-18s at 03:22. All four aircraft safely returned to their bases around 04:00, having completed their surveillance mission.
