In a significant development, Sergey Chemezov, the head of Rostec, a Russian state-owned defense conglomerate, has announced plans for the deployment of the ‘Koalitsiya’ howitzer in the Special Military Operation (SMO) zone. The ‘Koalitsiya’, a highly advanced piece of artillery, is expected to significantly bolster the capabilities of Russian forces within the conflict area. Although the exact timeline for its introduction into the field remains undisclosed, this revelation marks a critical turning point in the ongoing military operations in the region.
Rostec’s military endeavours
Rostec, a key player in Russia’s defense sector, has been making strategic moves to strengthen the country’s military prowess. The corporation recently disclosed the successful integration of the latest second-stage engine, Izdeliye 30, into specific Su-57 fighter jets. This comes as the demand for the advanced Su-57 fighter witnessed a twofold increase in 2023, with further growth expected in 2024. Su-57, a fifth-generation fighter jet, is set to see an increase in procurement by the Russian Aerospace Forces, with a total of 76 units expected by 2027.
Defying economic sanctions
Despite the economic sanctions imposed on Russia by Western powers, the country is set to receive a shipment of Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jets before the close of the year. This on-time delivery underlines the resilience and resolve of Russia’s defense industry. The country’s strategic focus has been on avoiding any potential reputational damage, a decline in export prospects, and the compromise of sensitive technology that could result from any loss of the Su-57 over Ukraine.
Other notable developments
Chemezov has also made critical remarks on the vulnerability of Western-made military equipment, stating that they can be affected in the same way as Soviet/Russian and Ukrainian models. He suggested that the Russian Kornet and Khrizantema anti-tank missile systems can penetrate the armor of Western armored vehicles from any side, and recommended equipping them with additional protection systems such as the Soviet-made Kontakt-1 dynamic protection to increase survivability. This statement aligns with Rostec’s broader efforts to enhance Russia’s military strength and readiness amid global tension.
