Russian, Belarusian leaders visit Valaam Island in Russia's Karelia
Presidents Vladimir Putin of Russia and Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus recently visited the island of Valaam, extending their two-day meeting that began with negotiations in Strelna.
During their visit to the Valaam Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior, the heads of state toured the Church of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God, located within the Smolensk hermitage on the monastery grounds, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
Following the official discussions, the leaders spent several hours in Kronshtadt, where they toured the local cathedral, engaged with visitors, and explored the Naval Glory Museum, set to open on July 30 in celebration of the Russian Navy Day.
Putin had previously visited Valaam in July 2019, accompanied by Lukashenko, when they toured the Valaam Monastery. On this latest visit, the leaders began their tour by visiting the Transfiguration Cathedral, an integral part of the monastery’s architectural ensemble.
The heads of state are scheduled to address key topics including Belarusian-Russian relations, the progress of Union State projects, regional security, and international issues.
The Valaam Monastery, a revered site in Russia, draws over 100,000 pilgrims and tourists annually.
