Secretary of State: US to push for 30-day ceasefire in talks with Russia
The U.S. will discuss a 30-day ceasefire and possible steps to end the war with Russia on March 12, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in Ireland after talks with Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia.
"We all eagerly await the Russian response and urge them strongly to consider ending all hostilities," Rubio said, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
Rubio has cautioned that Russia’s response to a proposed ceasefire will be a key indicator of its broader intentions. Should Moscow reject the proposal, it would provide significant insight into its strategic goals and global stance, he suggested.
Meanwhile, he indicated that European sanctions on Russia could become a focal point in any potential negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict. He noted that since European nations have imposed a range of restrictive measures against Russia, these would likely be raised as a topic of discussion if diplomatic talks were to progress. Additionally, the handling of frozen Russian assets might also emerge as part of such negotiations.
On the matter of enforcing a ceasefire, Rubio highlighted technological advancements that make monitoring compliance more effective than ever. He pointed to the role of satellite surveillance and other forms of aerial observation in tracking military activity.
With numerous observers on the ground and a range of intelligence tools available, he suggested that violations, such as drone or missile strikes, would be difficult to conceal.
