Media: Drone strikes hit Sudan's largest naval base VIDEO

08 May 2025 18:27

A drone strike has targeted Sudan’s largest naval base, marking the fourth consecutive day of attacks on the government’s military installations.

The airstrike occurred shortly after the Sudanese government severed diplomatic ties with the United Arab Emirates, accusing them of supplying weapons to rival paramilitary groups used in attacks on the army, Caliber.Az reports per AFP.

Port Sudan, located on the Red Sea coast, had previously served as a safe haven for hundreds of thousands of displaced persons and as the location for United Nations offices. However, on Sunday, drone strikes attributed to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) began in the area.

An anonymous military source, who was not authorised to speak with the media, stated that the drone attacks on May 7 were met with anti-aircraft missiles.

These strikes have reportedly damaged vital infrastructure, including the airport, naval base, fuel storage facilities, power substations, and a hotel near government buildings. The resulting fires, explosions, and widespread power outages have severely impacted the city.

Note that, as of May 2025, Sudan’s ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has further intensified, with both military and political developments shaping the landscape. The RSF reportedly took control of Al Nahud in West Kordofan, leading to significant civilian casualties and heightening tensions. In retaliation, the SAF launched airstrikes on Nyala Airport, reportedly targeting RSF supply routes.

At the same time, drone attacks by the RSF on Port Sudan, a key hub for humanitarian aid, disrupted vital services and led to infrastructure damage. These actions have drawn widespread international attention, raising concerns over the safety of civilians.

Politically, Sudan is increasingly fragmented, with the RSF and its allies forming a parallel government, the Government of Peace and Unity, challenging the legitimacy of the SAF-led administration.
