Serbian president vows to defend Moscow visit against EU criticism
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said on May 7 that he expected sharp criticism from European Union officials over his recent visit to Moscow but vowed to deliver a firm and comprehensive response should the bloc voice objections.
Speaking to Serbian journalists, Vučić said he was aware that a foreign ministers’ summit was taking place in Warsaw and anticipated strong reactions from the EU, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
“I am proud that I never misled anyone, never lied, and always spoke the truth. Even eight or nine months ago, when I discussed other key matters for our country with President Putin over the phone, I gave him my word,” he said.
The Serbian leader underscored the importance of honouring commitments, even under pressure. “A man is bound by his word. If you give it, it is your duty to do everything to keep it,” Vučić said, adding that he had come close to breaking his promise but not through any fault of his own.
Vučić also suggested he was prepared for initiatives targeting him from a figure “from the current war zone,” and stressed he would not remain silent in the face of criticism, as others had done in the past.
“Later, I expect important talks with European officials,” he said.
“Usually, two or three appear—then someone from the conflict zone joins in and publicly proposes something against me. But if they think I’ll stay silent, like others did at the last European Political Community meeting, they are mistaken. My response will be serious, responsible, and thoroughly prepared. I’ll tell them exactly what I think of every kind of political stance they’ve taken towards Serbia.”
