IDF targets Hezbollah militant in southern Lebanon
In response to ongoing ceasefire violations by Hezbollah, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) carried out a strike targeting a militant from the group in the Zaita area of southern Lebanon, the army’s press service announced.
The latest strikes in southern Lebanon occur against a backdrop of a US - and French‑brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah that came into effect in November 2024 after more than a year of intense fighting, with both sides accusing each other of violating its terms.
Israel has repeatedly carried out airstrikes and drone attacks in southern and eastern Lebanon, asserting these target Hezbollah operatives and infrastructure, while Lebanese authorities and international monitors have documented ongoing breaches of the truce.
Hezbollah, an Iran‑aligned militant and political organisation based in Lebanon, has maintained armed fighters south of the Litani River and resisted full disarmament, arguing it must retain weapons to deter Israeli aggression.
The fragile truce has been further strained by mutual accusations, with diplomatic efforts underway to manage tensions and prevent a return to large‑scale conflict.
