EU weighs response to potential US acquisition of Greenland, Kallas says
European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the bloc is considering how it might respond if US plans to acquire Greenland come to fruition.
"The messages we hear are extremely concerning," she said. "...if this is a real threat...then what would be our response?"
Kallas made the remarks during a press briefing with Egypt's Foreign Affairs minister Badr Abdelatty in Cairo on January 8, Caliber.Az, citing foreign media.
She added that the EU has discussed what a European response would look like if the US threat regarding Greenland is real.
President Donald Trump remains committed to the NATO alliance even as he and his national security team are holding active discussions about a US purchase of Greenland, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said on January 7.
Greenland, a vast semi‑autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, is included in NATO through Denmark’s membership. Its Arctic location gives it significant military importance, reinforced by a long-standing US military presence under defense agreements.
Trump has repeatedly suggested bringing Greenland under US control for strategic purposes, a proposal firmly rejected by both Danish and Greenlandic authorities as a breach of sovereignty.
