Nepalese PM calls on world to act over climate crisis

02 September 2026 12:10

Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah has blamed climate change for the devastating floods in the country and called for a global response to the crisis.

He said climate change has been proven to have raised temperatures in the Himalayan region by 1.8 degrees, so there is no doubt that it was the cause of the disaster, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

“Climate change is a global problem, and responding to disasters caused by it is a shared responsibility of the entire world,” he noted.

In his words, the flooding on the Bhote Kosi River in Rasuwa district was the largest disaster in the Himalayan region caused by a snow-and-rock avalanche.

“This incident clearly demonstrated that the risks we face in the Himalayan region are increasing as the climate changes. Therefore, it is time not only to raise awareness within the region itself, but also to firmly tell the international community about the catastrophic consequences of climate change that we are dealing with. Why did the snow fall? Where did such a huge amount of water come from? Human civilisation must find answers to these questions,” Shah added.
