German president slams Trump’s foreign policy, urges protection of global order
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier sharply condemned US foreign policy under President Donald Trump, warning the world against allowing the global order to collapse into a "den of robbers" where the ruthless seize whatever they desire.
In unusually forceful language, he warned that global democracy is under unprecedented assault, seemingly alluding to recent events like the weekend removal of Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Calling Russia’s annexation of Crimea and its full-scale invasion of Ukraine a turning point, Steinmeier said US actions marked a second historic rupture.
"Then there is the breakdown of values by our most important partner, the USA, which helped build this world order," Steinmeier said in remarks at a symposium on January 7.
"It is about preventing the world from turning into a den of robbers, where the most unscrupulous take whatever they want, where regions or entire countries are treated as the property of a few great powers," he said.
The president emphasised that active intervention is essential in threatening situations and that countries like Brazil and India must be persuaded to uphold the world order.
