BRICS, SCO seek more democratic, representative UN, Russia says

Countries belonging to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and BRICS are advocating comprehensive reform of the United Nations to make the organization more democratic, representative and effective, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said.

Speaking at a roundtable marking the 25th anniversary of the SCO and the 20th anniversary of BRICS, Ryabkov said the two groupings also support reform of the Bretton Woods institutions.

“Among other things, the SCO and BRICS countries advocate comprehensive reform of the UN to make it more democratic, representative, effective and efficient. They also consistently seek to reform the Bretton Woods institutions,” Ryabkov said.

He argued that changes to the global financial system should reflect shifts in the world economy and the distribution of economic power.

“Bringing the Bretton Woods institutions into line with the actual balance of forces in the global economy is an imperative,” Ryabkov said.

“And it is important that our colleagues in BRICS and the SCO are well aware of this,” he added.
