European Commission to revise Arctic policy amid geopolitical threats
The European Commission is set to revise its Arctic policy to address emerging geopolitical threats, EU spokesperson Arianna Podesta said.
She made remarks during a briefing in Brussels, referencing recent US actions concerning Greenland, Caliber.Az reports.
“I can refer you to what the [European Commission] President has said herself when she has given a speech at the Nordic Council. I believe it was end of October, early November, if I'm not mistaken with the timeline. What she has said is Europe must be more proactive and more invested in the Arctic. That is why we are reviewing our Arctic policy to address new geopolitical threats”, she said.
Podesta stressed that the EU is pursuing this direction in its work, continuing to strengthen strategic ties with its Nordic partners and, notably, with Greenland.
Greenland, a vast semi‑autonomous region of the Kingdom of Denmark, is part of NATO through Denmark’s membership. Its strategic Arctic position gives it major military significance, bolstered by a long-standing US presence under defence agreements.
US President Donald Trump repeatedly proposed acquiring Greenland for strategic reasons, a plan strongly opposed by both Danish and Greenlandic authorities as a violation of sovereignty.
