Security fears have led to Beijing’s sweeping drone ban

03 May 2026 07:11

In an unexpected move, China — long regarded as the birthplace and global powerhouse of consumer drones — is now sharply restricting their use in its capital, Beijing.

Under sweeping new regulations that came into force on May 1, residents can no longer freely buy, rent, transport, or fly recreational drones within the city without official approval. The move marks a striking reversal for a country that dominates the global drone market.

As a result, displays at the Beijing flagship store of DJI—the world’s largest drone producer—have now had to remove the devices from public view, as reported by CNN.

The new rules introduce strict requirements for users. Drone operators must now register with local police, sign up through an official app, and pass a 30-minute test before being allowed to fly. Transporting drones into Beijing has also been heavily restricted.

Devices and key components can only be brought into the city with permission and must be carried by verified, registered owners. The regulations go further, banning drones from being stored in designated sites within the urban core and prohibiting any attempts to modify or “hack” drone systems.

Authorities say the measures are aimed at “strengthening the management of unmanned aerial vehicles” and “safeguarding the security of the capital.” Chinese dominance Drones remain deeply embedded across China and are associated with the country. They are widely used for photography, agriculture, and food delivery, and even increasingly serve as substitutes for fireworks during celebrations.

By the end of 2025, more than three million drones had been officially registered nationwide, reflecting rapid growth in the sector. However, their widespread use has also raised security concerns, particularly in Beijing, where key political and military sites are concentrated.

As CNN argues, officials are wary not only of drones’ surveillance capabilities but also their potential for harm. Conflicts such as the Russia-Ukraine war have demonstrated how modified recreational drones can be used as weapons, amplifying fears over their misuse.
