Some 30 flights cancelled, delayed amid heavy snowfall in Almaty
Heavy snowfall has resulted in the cancellation and delay of over 30 flights at Almaty International Airport.
The airport reported that "restrictions on de-icing services have been introduced due to the intensity of snow," Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
“All airport services are operating in a heightened capacity to mitigate delays and restore normal operations. Passengers are encouraged to check the current status of their flights on the official websites of the airport and their airlines before heading out,” the airport press service said.
The snowfall commenced on January 22 at 9:00 AM local time and is expected to continue for the next two days, according to city administration forecasts. City governor Beibut Shakhanov assured residents that communal services are actively removing snow around the clock.
Currently, 600 units of equipment, 1,500 workers, and 950 tonnes of anti-icing materials are being deployed on the roads. Shakhanov stated that major cleaning efforts on main and district streets will start once snow accumulation reaches a certain level, with the process anticipated to take between 3 to 7 days.
Residents are advised to refrain from parking their vehicles along roadways to facilitate snow removal efforts.
