US, China reopen military dialogue after two-year break

The US and China have resumed military command-level contacts after a two-year hiatus, with senior commanders from both countries meeting in Victoria, Canada.

General Yang Zhibin, commander of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army’s Eastern Theatre Command, met Admiral Samuel J. Paparo, commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command.

According to a statement from the US command, the two sides discussed the importance of maintaining open channels of communication between senior military leaders to reduce the risk of misjudging situations and ensure safe and professional interaction between their armed forces.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 28th Indo-Pacific Chiefs of Defence Conference, which took place in Victoria from August 31 to September 2.
