Israeli military holds surprise readiness exercise to test multi-front response

07 September 2026 10:47

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted a surprise readiness exercise on September 6 to test the operational preparedness of its General Staff and forces for a sudden, large-scale multi-front event.

The exercise, dubbed "Breaking Dawn 2.0," included a visit by IDF Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir to the Ground Training Centre in the Negev, where he observed troop readiness and responses to a simulated complex scenario, Israeli media reports.

The exercise tested the alertness of regular and reserve forces, decision-making procedures and operational responses across different levels of command.

"We are assessing the readiness of the forces and demanding that they meet the highest standard at every level—from the soldier at a position or outpost, through the command and control centres and headquarters, to the General Staff; from the soldier in the field to the Chief of the General Staff," Zamir said.

"The exercise is being conducted as part of an ongoing process to strengthen the foundations of the IDF and the readiness and preparedness of troops and commanders at all levels," the IDF announced.

The exercise was designed to ensure that the military can respond effectively to a surprise attack or crisis during a holiday period, when significant numbers of troops may be on leave.
