South Africa confirms death of ambassador to France, investigation underway
The South African government has confirmed the death of its ambassador to France, Nkosinathi Emmanuel Mthethwa, under circumstances that remain under investigation by French authorities.
In a statement published on the official website of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), the government expressed “deep sorrow and profound regret” over the ambassador’s passing, Caliber.Az reports.
“The Government of the Republic of South Africa announces with deep sorrow and profound regret the untimely passing of His Excellency Ambassador Nkosinathi Emmanuel Mthethwa, South Africa’s Ambassador to the French Republic,” the statement read.
Ambassador Mthethwa, a respected public servant, was appointed to the diplomatic post in December 2023. Prior to his tenure in Paris, he held several senior ministerial positions, including Minister of Police and Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture. He also served on the Board of Directors for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Local Organising Committee—an event that marked a milestone in South Africa’s sporting and cultural history.
In addition to his governmental roles, Mthethwa was a long-standing member of the African National Congress (ANC), having served in the party’s highest decision-making structures. His career was widely viewed as emblematic of dedicated public service and national commitment.
In his most recent role, Ambassador Mthethwa was tasked with strengthening bilateral relations between South Africa and France, and fostering deeper diplomatic engagement.
“I have no doubt that his passing is not only a national loss but is also felt within the international diplomatic community,” said South African Minister Ronald Lamola.
The exact cause of Ambassador Mthethwa’s death remains unknown, and French authorities have launched an investigation.
The South African government extended its condolences to the late ambassador’s family, friends, and colleagues during what it described as “a period of immense grief.” Ambassador Mthethwa is survived by his wife and children.
“We honour his legacy of unwavering patriotism and service to our nation,” the statement concluded.

He has been found dead in central Paris, authorities confirmed on September 30.
The 58-year-old diplomat’s body was discovered beneath the Hyatt Hotel near Porte Maillot in the 17th arrondissement.
Preliminary reports indicate he may have fallen from the hotel’s 22nd floor.
