Sweden to deploy air-defence reinforced battalion to Latvia in 2026
In 2026, a Swedish Army battalion, reinforced with air-defence combat vehicles, will be stationed in Latvia, Delfi reports, citing the Latvian Ministry of Defence.
The Swedish Armed Forces are already preparing for the deployment, with soldiers taking part in exercises and joint training at the Revingehed training ground. While the unit retains the structure of a reduced manoeuvre battalion, it will be strengthened with anti-aircraft capabilities.
The reinforcement aims to enhance the battalion’s ability to detect and neutralise aerial threats, including drones and helicopters, at the tactical level. This move is seen as part of Sweden’s contribution to NATO’s collective security in the Baltic region.
In October, crews of the air-defence vehicles underwent intensive training together with Sweden’s Helikopter 15 helicopter fleet. The vehicles, similar to the Stridsfordon 90 IFV, are equipped with radar systems and feature an increased gun elevation angle for effective engagement of low-altitude targets.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the deployment of the battalion in Latvia will strengthen the alliance’s defensive potential on its eastern flank.
