The Times: British aluminum recycling could help Ukraine’s defence industry

27 August 2026 09:35

Ukraine's defence industry could benefit from recycled aluminium collected in Britain, potentially helping address shortages of missiles for Patriot air-defence systems, according to The Times editor Mark Hollingsworth.

In an article published by The Times, Hollingsworth argued that recycled British aluminium could be directed toward Ukraine's defence needs. The metal is used in the production of a wide range of military and aerospace equipment, including fighter jets, armoured vehicles, drones, missiles and satellites.

Hollingsworth proposed that the United Kingdom adopt a deposit-return scheme similar to one used in Turkey. Under such a system, consumers receive money in a digital wallet when they return aluminium cans and other recyclable waste.

He argued that such an approach would allow Britain to support Ukraine's defence industry without incurring significant public expenditure.
