Syrian FM calls for lifting of US sanctions during Qatar visit
Syria’s new Islamist leadership has called on the United States to lift its sanctions, describing them as a major obstacle to the country’s recovery from years of conflict, during a high-profile visit to Qatar on January 5.
“These sanctions are a barrier to the swift recovery and development of the Syrian people,” stated Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shibani, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
He made the remark after meeting with Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, who also serves as the country’s foreign minister, adding that Syrians are looking forward to services and partnerships with other nations.
Shibani emphasized that the sanctions, initially imposed on the Assad regime, now disproportionately affect ordinary Syrians. “We reiterate our call for the United States to lift these sanctions, which have shifted from targeting a regime to burdening the Syrian people,” he added.
The visit marks Shibani’s second international trip following the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad by rebel forces on December 8. He noted that Qatar is poised to play a key role in Syria’s reconstruction and political transition. Doha, which had maintained its opposition to Assad due to his government’s harsh response to the 2011 protests, has expressed openness to working with Syria’s new leadership.
Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mohammed Al-Khulaifi, shared details of the discussions, stating that Shibani had presented a comprehensive roadmap for Syria's future. “The roadmap aims to rebuild Syria, restore its Arab and international relations, and establish a government that represents all Syrians and respects their rights,” Al-Khulaifi said.
Highlighting their shared vision, Al-Khulaifi added, “We are collaborating to ensure that no foreign interference undermines Syria’s sovereignty.”
Shibani was accompanied by Defence Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra and Intelligence Chief Anas Khattab during his visit, meeting other senior Qatari officials. He stressed that Syria’s focus is on fostering stability, security, and economic recovery while building robust international partnerships.
The foreign minister is scheduled to visit the United Arab Emirates and Jordan later this week to further these objectives. On his first international trip to Saudi Arabia last Wednesday, Shibani engaged in discussions with Saudi officials about supporting Syria’s ongoing political transition.
“This is a new chapter for Syria. We are committed to creating a nation where every citizen feels represented and empowered,” Shibani remarked, underscoring the administration’s vision for the country’s future.
