Syrian government agrees to release detained tribal families in Suwayda
The Syrian government has reached an agreement to release families of detained tribal members in the southern governorate of Suwayda, officials have announced.
Ahmad Dalati, head of internal security in Suwayda, said the release would take place within the next few hours following government-led mediation efforts aimed at reducing tensions and fostering reconciliation in the region, Caliber.Az reports per Syrian media.
Speaking to the press, Dalati emphasised the government’s commitment to ensuring the safe return of these families to their homes, underscoring the importance of protecting all citizens and maintaining national unity.
He also called on all parties to uphold the ceasefire and allow state institutions to restore security and stability across the governorate.
The announcement follows the implementation of a ceasefire on Sunday evening, brokered between rival factions in Suwayda.
The US Special Envoy to Syria, Tom Barrett, confirmed the ceasefire came into effect at 17:00 local time and said preparations are underway for a prisoner exchange between the involved parties.
The recent agreement to release detained tribal families in Suwayda is part of broader efforts to address escalating sectarian violence in southern Syria. Clashes between Druze militias and Bedouin tribes intensified after the Syrian government's withdrawal from the region, leading to mass displacements and significant casualties.
The violence prompted international concern, with Israel launching airstrikes in support of the Druze community and the U.S. facilitating mediation efforts. A ceasefire was brokered on 16 July, though violations continued, including mortar attacks and accusations of atrocities by Syrian-affiliated fighters.
The release of detainees is seen as a critical step in restoring trust and stability, with both the Syrian government and tribal leaders emphasising the need for adherence to the ceasefire and the safe return of displaced persons.
