Tehran accuses US of complicating path to nuclear agreement
Iran has rejected suggestions that it requires foreign assistance to manage its nuclear materials and criticized what it describes as inconsistent US positions in discussions surrounding a potential nuclear agreement.
Speaking at a press conference, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei responded to reports citing comments by US President Donald Trump regarding possible conditions for a future nuclear deal. According to the reports, Trump suggested that Iran should remove and dispose of its “buried enriched uranium” with the involvement of the United States and a third country, potentially including China.
Baghaei was also asked whether Iran would require foreign technological support to access the Fordow nuclear facility and transport nuclear materials from the site.
In response, the spokesperson dismissed the notion, stating that Iran is fully capable of carrying out any nuclear-related operations independently.
“Iran knows perfectly well how to carry out any work related to nuclear issues,” Baghaei said, adding that the country has no need for external assistance in this area.
Addressing the broader diplomatic process, Baghaei noted that no concrete negotiations on nuclear matters have taken place at this stage. He added that Tehran’s immediate priority remains ending the ongoing conflict.
The Iranian official also criticized what he described as a lack of consistency in Washington’s negotiating position, arguing that frequent shifts in demands and contradictory public statements make meaningful dialogue more difficult.
“It is obvious that if one side’s position is constantly changing, the other side is also compelled to take its own views and conditions into account. New demands cannot be imposed unilaterally while expecting the other side to simply accept them. This inevitably complicates the process and prolongs the path toward a result. At the very least, that is what can be said about the consequences of such an approach to negotiations,” Baghaei said.
