Tehran threatens legal, political action if Europe supports US strikes
Iran warned European nations that it would take political and legal measures if any country allows the United States to use its military bases for operations against Tehran, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said.
Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stressed that European countries claiming adherence to international law face a critical test.
“We have already said that Europe is under significant pressure from the United States. However, European states that claim commitment to the rule of law and international law are now undergoing a serious test. Let’s see how much they truly adhere to these principles and whether they are ready to play a constructive role in international politics,” he said, urging nations to avoid involvement in the conflict.
Baghaei singled out Eastern European nations, specifically mentioning Romania. “Yes, we are aware of the relevant decision. If it is implemented, it would mean participation in military aggression against Iran. From the perspective of international law, this is completely unacceptable and will entail international responsibility for Romania. Politically, it would also be a black mark in the history of relations between our countries, as the peoples of Iran and Romania have always maintained friendly ties. There is no reason for any state to participate in this aggression. From our perspective, this is absolutely unacceptable. We will respond accordingly, both legally and politically,” he said at a weekly press conference.
Earlier reports indicate that Romania is preparing to approve a US request to temporarily station American fighter jets at the Kogalniceanu airbase to participate in a potential military operation against Iran.
