Thailand, Cambodia to hold high-level ceasefire talks on December 27

24 December 2025 11:29

A high-level meeting of the General Border Committee of Thailand and Cambodia to discuss the establishment of a ceasefire in the ongoing border conflict between the two countries will take place on December 27, the Thai Foreign Ministry said.

Between December 24 and 26, negotiations within this mechanism will be held at the secretariat level, per TASS.

“The actual high-level meeting will take place on December 27. This is the standard format for all sessions of the General Border Committee,” the statement said.

Member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) previously welcomed the start of discussions on the possibility of establishing a ceasefire in the border conflict zone between Thailand and Cambodia.

Participants of a special meeting of the foreign ministers of ASEAN countries reminded the conflicting parties of the ceasefire agreement of July 28, the decisions of the extraordinary session of the General Border Committee on August 7, and the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration signed on October 26, 2025, and strongly urged Cambodia and Thailand to fully and effectively implement them.

The recent fighting between the two states, which erupted on December 8, spread across multiple provinces along the 800km border, involving artillery, rockets, drone attacks, and Thai air strikes using F-16 jets on alleged Cambodian military positions, including near casino hubs and infrastructure.

Both sides accused each other of aggression and civilian targeting, with reports of strikes on residential areas, hospitals, bridges, and cultural sites.

As of late December 2025, the conflict has caused at least 80 deaths (military and civilian combined, with higher estimates on the Cambodian side due to Thailand's superior firepower), wounded hundreds, and displaced nearly one million people—around 525,000 in Cambodia and 400,000 in Thailand—forcing mass evacuations and border closures.
