Toyota to shift most production from Mexico to Texas
Toyota will shift most production of its midsize Tacoma pickup truck from Mexico to the United States as part of a $3.6 billion investment in its manufacturing plant in San Antonio, Texas, the company announced on July 7.
The transition of production from Toyota's facility in Tijuana, Mexico, is expected to take approximately four years, according to the Japanese automaker, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed the decision in a post on Truth Social, writing: "Toyota is moving from Mexico to the United States [Texas!]. A really big deal. Tariffs at work!"
The announcement comes days after Washington declined to renew a North American trade agreement with Mexico and Canada, a move that has increased uncertainty for businesses operating across the region.
Toyota had previously announced in November that it planned to invest up to $10 billion in the United States over the next five years.
