Trump administration considers selling 440 federal properties to cut waste FBI, Justice Department headquarters added to the list

05 March 2025 11:49

The headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the US Department of Justice have been added to a growing list of more than 440 federal government properties that could be sold, according to a report from the US General Services Administration (GSA).

The GSA's published list includes a variety of federal real estate, such as office buildings, garages, country homes, and other properties that the agency says are no longer essential to government operations, per Caliber.Az

The GSA emphasized that selling these properties would ensure that taxpayer dollars are not being wasted on vacant or underutilized spaces.

Among the notable properties on the list is the FBI’s long-standing headquarters, the Edgar Hoover Building, named after the agency's first director, J. Edgar Hoover, who served from 1924 to 1972. The Hoover Building, which was constructed in 1975, has housed the FBI for nearly half a century. The US Department of Justice’s headquarters, a 110,000-square-meter building constructed in 1935, is also included.

In addition, the historic main post office building, built in 1899 in Neo-Romanesque style, is part of the list. In 2013, the building was leased to a company owned by then-businessman Donald Trump, who transformed it into the Trump International Hotel after a $200 million renovation. However, in 2022, the lease rights were sold, and the Waldorf Astoria Hotel opened in its place.

Other properties that could be sold include the American Red Cross headquarters and buildings belonging to the US Department of Labor and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The move comes amid the US national debt, which exceeds $36.5 trillion, translating to over $107,000 for each American resident. After his inauguration in January 2025, President Donald Trump appointed entrepreneur Elon Musk to oversee a new agency tasked with conducting a large-scale audit of government budget expenditures. Musk has stated that he expects to reduce federal spending by as much as $2 trillion.
