Trump claims "serious talks" with Putin on ending Ukraine war, eyes Moscow visit
US President Donald Trump has said that negotiations between Russia and the United States regarding the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine, as well as economic cooperation, are progressing well.
“I am in serious discussions with President Vladimir Putin of Russia concerning the ending of the War, and also major Economic Development transactions which will take place between the United States and Russia. Talks are proceeding very well!” Trump wrote on US media, Caliber.Az reports.
Speaking alongside French President Emmanuel Macron at the White House, Trump stated he would consider visiting Moscow “if everything is settled.” However, he ruled out a visit on May 9, calling it “too soon.”
Trump also refused to label Putin a dictator, telling reporters, “I don’t use those words lightly.” When asked whether he considered Putin a dictator in the same way he previously described Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, he said, “Let’s see how events unfold. I believe we have a chance for a truly good settlement between various nations.”
President said his comments referred to Ukraine and Europe but did not elaborate further. “The other side has significant support as well,” he added.
Trump reiterated his support for ending bloodshed in Ukraine and has previously criticised Zelenskyy, calling him “a dictator without elections” last week. He has also called for elections to be held in Ukraine.
