Unidentified drones cross from Germany, hover over Belgian military grounds
A swarm of 15 drones was detected over the Belgian military base in Elsenborn, near the German border, prompting an ongoing investigation by the Belgian army.
According to Belgian media, the incident occurred around 1:45 a.m. on October 3 and was recorded near the village of Elsenborn, home to a large military training ground, a training centre, and an air force base. This facility spans approximately 28 square kilometres and is situated about 5 kilometres from Germany.
The Belgian Ministry of Defence confirmed the presence of the drones, explaining that they were discovered accidentally during a test of the base’s surveillance and drone detection system.
Preliminary reports indicate that the drones entered Belgian airspace after crossing from Germany, where they were initially spotted by police in the town of Düren.
At this time, the origin of the drones and the identity of the operators remain unknown. The Belgian military has launched a formal investigation to determine the details.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of unidentified drone sightings across Europe, especially in Germany, where drones have appeared near sensitive infrastructure. Moscow has denied any involvement in these occurrences.
Notably, on the night of September 27, multiple drone swarms were detected over military sites in northern Germany. In response, the German Interior Ministry initiated measures to enhance drone defences and considered granting the Bundeswehr authority to neutralise suspicious drones.
