Poland nears completion of Europe’s tallest Virgin Mary statue

21 July 2026 15:55

Construction of a monumental statue of the Virgin Mary in the Polish village of Konotopie, near Toruń, is entering its final stage, with the structure set to become the tallest statue of its kind in Europe once completed.

The monument will stand 55.6 metres high, surpassing the famous Christ statues in Rio de Janeiro and Świebodzin, Caliber.Az reports, citing RMF24

Construction began in 2025 and is expected to be completed in August 2026. The official consecration ceremony is scheduled for August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The project was initiated and fully financed by Polish billionaire entrepreneur Roman Karkosik.

The Virgin Mary figure itself will rise 40 metres, while an additional 15-metre pedestal shaped like a crown will support the monument. The pedestal will include an observation deck offering panoramic views of the surrounding area.

The creators of the project say the aim is not only to build a record-breaking structure but also to create a place for prayer, reflection and pilgrimage.

Around 2,500 cubic metres of concrete have been used in the construction of the statue.

Although work is still ongoing, the site has already begun attracting tourists and pilgrims.
